History

The Richard J. Daley Center was originally known as the Chicago Civic Center.  Located in the heart of the Chicago Loop, the Daley Center was Chicago’s first major public building to be constructed in a modern rather than a classical architectural style. For more information, click here.

Private Events

The Daley Center Plaza is available for private events, such as weddings, festivals, and corporate functions, in addition to civic and cultural events. We accept applications for use of the plaza on a first come, first serve basis. Applications must be received by the Special Events Coordinator no later than 30 days prior to an event. Click here for more information on our events.

Under the Picasso

The Richard J. Daley Center offers free cultural programming for visitors throughout the year that take place every weekday from 12-1pm under the Picasso. These performances include singing, dancing, flag raisings, cultural ceremonies, and so much more. To apply for a noontime performance or to see what events are coming up, click here for more information.

Filming

The Daley Center facilities have seen helicopter landings, armored tanks, police chases, bus crashes, gun-wielding criminals and elderly characters hogging the pay phones. However, every movie that has been filmed in our facilities has the cast and crew of The Blues Brothers to thank for opening the door for them. For more information on filming at The Daley Center, click here.

Directory

The Daley Center has a variety of tenants in our building. For more details, please click here.

While we were unable to continue many of our Memorial Day traditions this year, the City of Chicago’s Mayor Lori Lightfoot, Brigadier General Mark C. Jackson, Gold Star Mother Modie Lavin and First Lady Amy Eshelman paused to continue one very special tradition, and that is the laying of a wreath at the eternal flame. To watch the full wreath laying ceremony, please visit the Daley Center’s Facebook page. ...

Though we may not be able to honor the fallen and usher in summer weather in the ways we would like, we can still take time this Memorial Day to honor those who have died while serving in the U.S Military. This Memorial Day, take a moment to think of those who have lost their lives to protect America. #veterans #MemorialDay #honorthefallen ...

We are a day late with this post but wanted to make sure we shared our gratitude for first responders. The Daley Center is proud to see Chicago’s buildings lit up red in honor of paramedics, police officers, firefighters, emergency medical technicians, and the many other first responders protecting us during this pandemic. We thank you all! ...

The fountain has been restored at Daley Plaza!! It’s giving us hope on this rainy Monday morning that warmer weather is right around the corner 🙌🏼☀️🌷

For over 100 years, International Women’s Day has celebrated the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women around the world. This March 8th, the Richard J. Daley Center is happy to support #EachforEqual, a campaign to challenge gender-based stereotypes and biases. In 2020, women still aren’t paid equally to male counterparts and are underrepresented in politics and boardrooms. We firmly believe that gender equality is essential for communities to thrive. #IWD2020 ...

100 years ago, women fought and won the right to vote across the nation. In honor of the 19th Amendment and National Women’s History Month, the Richard J. Daley Center joins with the @nationalwomenshistoryalliance in honoring the women of the suffrage movement, like Chicago’s own Ida B. Wells and Jane Addams. #Hereliesasuffrage #forwardtogether #womanssuffragehistory #womenshistorymonth ...

For Black History Month, Richard J. Daley Center celebrates that Black history is Chicago’s history! From Jean Baptiste Point du Sable, the first non-Native American settler in Chicago, to astronaut Mae Jemison, Black Chicagoans have raised the Windy City to prominence. And since 2020 is an election year, we’re also celebrating the constitutional amendments that forged a path to voting for Black Americans - 2020 is the 150th anniversary of the 15th Amendment and 100th anniversary of the 19th Amendment. #MBRECelebrates #BlackHistoryMonth ...
