Richard J. Daley Center Cooling Tower Lining Project Overview:

Following are details of the project.

Installation of a continuous lining system in the cold-water basins at cooling towers 5 through 11. The work is to be completed during the annual tower shutdown, between approximately November 1, 2025, and March 1, 2026. Final shutdown and restart dates to be determined and confirmed with the building.

Significant items that are part of the cooling tower lining project include:

    1. Carefully remove the bottom approximately 5 feet of fill material, drift panels, and louver panels to access the complete cold-water basin. Protect and store removed components onsite for reinstallation. Replace any damaged components in kind.
    2. Install all necessary screens, valves, and other protection to prevent damage and prevent debris from entering the cooling tower components, damaging equipment, or escaping into the air.
    3. Prepare all steel surfaces to be lined to SSPC SP10. Surfaces to be lined include all submerged interior basin surfaces and metal components. Coating termination edge to be 6 inches above high-water line on all elements where possible.
    4. Repair perforations in steel liner with steel patch plate to match existing, mechanical fasteners, and seals as required to create a watertight basin before liner is installed.
    5. Remove the bottom interior partition wall panels to coat elements behind, shop coat removed panel and reinstall.
    6. Remove and replace the bottom drift panel support channels with new fiberglass support as manufactured by Brentwood or equal.
    7. Remove and replace drain mesh with stainless steel.
    8. Remove and replace bottom 5 feet of fill alignment grid with new PVC coated grid.
    9. Remove steel fill box and other removable components for shop coating.
    10. Detail all bolt heads, joints, edges, and corners as recommended by manufacturer for best performance.
    11. Install CIM coating system following all manufacturing instructions and technical specifications for this product.
    12. Clean all cooling tower components prior to reinstalling fill media to remove all dust and debris.
    13. Reinstall fill media, louver panels, and drift eliminators.
    14. Clean tower components again following re-installation of fill media, prior to filling and operating cooling tower.
    15. Contractor to assist with restart of tower to ensure all systems are operating as intended.

Alternate 1 includes replacement of the existing wood fill in cooling towers 5 through 8 and 9 through 11 with new PVC fill in lieu of reinstalling the existing wood slat fill.
